ORDERED TO WORK
STRIKING MINERS IN
U.S.A.
WASHINGTON, January 20. President Roosevelt has directed that all the striking anthracite coal miners return to work immediately. He in- [ timated that if they, failed to do so within 48 hours the Government would take the necessary steps to protect the security of the nation against the strike, which was doing serious injury to the war effort. I Meanwhile, 5000 of the miners, anj ticipating the President's order, have returned to work. About 12,000 are still idle. One union official declared that the men will not work under the Army and will not work under Mr. John L. Lewis, president of the Mine; Workers' Union, but they are willing that the Government take over management of the mines for the duration of the war. They feel that if the Government does this and thoroughly investigates conditions, they will get a square deal, The miners are demanding increased pay of two dollars a day and cancellation of a 50 cents a month increase in union dues.
