ONE OCCUPANT DROWNED
(0.C.) AUCKLAND. January 3. One man was drowned and two others reached the shore only after clinging to their overturned boat for an hour when a dinghy in which they were fishing capsized at the mouth of the Whau Creek at about 5 p.m yesterday . The man drowned was Hector Henry Smith, boilermaker, aged 29, of Alberta Street. Point Chevalier. In company with Messrs. J. Harrison and Peehen, Smith went out fishing in the afternoon in an Bft dinghy, and while he was standing up to cast his line the boat overturned, throwing all three into the water. An attempt was made by Harrison to catch his i friend, but he had to desist when his legs became entangled with one of the fishing lines. Hearing Smith say he was done, Peehen called for help, but Smith sank. The other men clung to the dinghy, which drifted into shallow water, allowing them to touch the bottom. They then walked two miles through the shallows to reach a farmhouse at Te Atatu, where they arrived suffering from shock and exposure. An extensive search for Smith's body was carried out today without result. Aeroplanes of the R.N.Z.A.F. co-oper-ated and the police launch dragged the area.
