(P.A.)'' -DUNEDIN, January 3. ; Otago beat Canterbury by nine runs on the first innings. In reply to Otago's 223-Can-terbury made 214. Otago compiled 188 in the second innings (Toomey 53, Mills 33; Mulcock tkree for. 26, Hurt five for 67), and Canterbury was left with1 198 to get for aij outright win In just on three hours. A fine partnership by Cr'oinb (39) and Hadlee (65) retrieved the situation after four wickets had fallen for 23, but the rate of scoring was not sufficient to get the required runs, and at stumps the total was 173 for seven wickets. A feature of the Otago attack was the veteran AUcott's bowling. He bowled unchanged for 165 minutes, taking four' for 56 oft 20 overs; and keeping all the batsmen quiet. Robertson took three for 46.
