CRICKET AT BASIN
SERVICES V.WELLINGTON
Wellington's second'visit to the crease on Saturday in the cricket match at the 'Basin Reserve with" a Services' side was much more businesslike than the first, arid it; changed^ the: whole complexion of the game. It was" so productive that when eight wickets had fallen the closure was applied and a bid then made to turn the tables on the. Services, who, in their second innings, needed 172 runs in 80 minutes. A "sixer" by O'Brien indicated that-; the Services were right after" the runs. However, wickets beg&n to fall without yielding a great deal, and in the end the-Services had to reverse their policy of forcing the pace, and, playing for time, they had two wickets in hand when stumps were drawn, their score then being 47 short '.of Wellington's aggregate. Coupland and Mooney paved the way for Wellington's recovery* Wilson and Rogers also playing strong hands, arid Dickinson and Browne completing the uplift with a show of dashing batsmanship by which runs were made at a rapid rate. Dickinson and Browne each tppped^the half-century, Dickinson being unbeaten when the declaration was made with the. score at 277 \ for eight wickets. That spectacular i play was repeated' for a time by the Services' representatives,. O'Brien and Hay ward giving the innings a flourish- j ing start. Dickinson then, rather turned the scale, though without reducing the life that had been exhibited in the play. His bowling was full of dash and effectiveness, and it caused good wickets-to crash to such an extent that! the Services were placed on the defensive, a,nd in this Dustin and Reaney were solid. The match was drawn, Services having the lead on the first innings. The bowlers who worked up most pace had the greater measure of success in Saturday's play, Pritchard and Dickinson- each taking four wickets, and being ably supported by Reaney and Ashenden respectively. > Details:— > .
