FIRE IN CAFE
Summoned by calls from two street alarms," the Central and Thorndon Fire Brigades sent five machines at 2.15 a.m. yesterday to the Rio Grande Cafe, in the Ford Building in Courtenay Place. Firemen soon had the blaze, under control but it had been burning well before, the alarm was given and the interior of the cafe was .badly damaged, particularly towards the kitchen and store at the : rear, where the fire is believed to have originated, probably from a smouldering cigarette thrown among- rubbish before the place was vacated about midnight.
