OFF FRENCH COAST

NAVY SMASHES AXIS SUPPLY SHIPS

LONDON, November 2

Early yesterday morning British warships sighted thi'ee Axis supply vessels creeping along the French coast. They were escorted by two torpedo-boats and an armed trawler.

The Navy went into action. One supply ship was set on fire, and another began to sink and was abandoned. More damage was probably done to the convoy and escort, but results could not be seen owing to fog and a heavy smoke screen laid down by the enemy. The British ships emerged unscathed and not a man was lost.
