DESTROYER FIGHTS E-BOATS

RUGBY. November 1

A battle between the British destroyer Westminster and German Eboats on the ..night of October 13 has been described by one of the destroyer's officers. The Westminster claimed to have sunk one E-boat and damaged two others.

The destroyer was escorting a convoy in the North Sea when the sound of the E-boats' engines was first heard.

"There seemed to be about 18 E-boats attacking at various times," the officer said. "They came in waves, the first three of which were driven off.

"Things then became too hot for the E-boats and they laid a smoke-screen, but we hit one of the enemy squarely with three shells and she appeared to fall to bits."

The engagement took place on the anniversary of a similar fight in which the Westminster claimed to have sunk two E-boats a year ago.—B.O.W.
