LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
TALKS ON OTHER LANDS
Travel talks, instructive demonstrations, and music have made up wellbalanced programmes at recent meetings of the League of Mothers. War work, such as knitting and the packing of soldiers' parcels, continues.
At a well-attended meeting of the Kelburn branch Miss Lucy Cowan read extracts from the poem "The White Cliffs," by Alice Duer Miller, and solos were sung by Mrs. Beswick. A visit to Holland formed the subject of an interesting talk given by Miss Maddever to Petone members. Mrs. Lanham sang and a bracket -of numbers was given by the league choir. Holland was also the background of an address to the Island Bay-Berhampore branch of the league, Mrs. Schrimmer speaking on "Women of the Netherlands."
A humorous and entertaining talk on "Strange Customs in Restaurants I Have Visited" was given to the Ngaio League of Mothers by Miss Maddever. Mrs. W. S. Rollings welcomed Mrs. Millward, president of the Petone branch, and her choir, who sang partsongs.
Johnsonville. members enjoyed a programme arranged by Mrs. Cable, of Karori, who spoke on the influence of music, with items by the Karori Lyric Singers. , Wool was ' distributed and completed garments handed in.
A dressmaking' lesson occupied members of the Brooklyn branch at their September meeting, Mrs. Baker, a representative of a college of dressmaking, giving, a demonstration of pattern-cutting. ; A travel talk was given at the Kelburn branch.by Mrs. R. G. Kain, who spoke of her trip to England and of "people in the news." Dr. Smith was . the speaker at Hataitai; he gave facts and figures' relating to social diseases. The musical programme included solos by Mrs. Wiltshire. Lady Elliott, the guest speaker at Wadestown, gave an interesting account of her visit to England in 1939.
