POWERS TO PUNISH PROFITEERS
(Rec. 11 a.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 24
The penalties for persons convicted in the Lower Court of black marketing or profiteering are to be a minimum of three months' imprisonment without, bhe option of a fine for individuals and a fine of £1000 for companies under a Bill introduced in the House of Representatives today. If the offence is prosecuted upon an indictment the minimum penalty will be imprisonment for twelve months without the option of a fine for an individual and a fine of £10,000 for a company.
Every person who is a director or an employee actively concerned in the conduct of a business is deemed guilty of an offence unless he proves that it is without his knowledge and that all due care was taken to prevent it. Thus a firm can be fined £ 10,000 and the guilty directors or employees be sentenced to twelve months' gaol as well.
