BIG SALE YESTERDAY WELLINGTON CAMPAIGN i ■' A splendids result was achieved , in the city streets yesterday by the sellers of comforts coupons for the ; benefit of the New Zealand sick and - wounded, prisoners of war, and men in the field. It was announced last night that receipts, which were still subject to a final check, totalled approximately £1170 for - the day. and that the amount raised . in Wellington up to that time was over £2500 for the week. The number of coupon sellers- was reinforced by some 36 dental clinic nurses, who among them collected £246 12s sd. The bulk of the selling has been borne by men and girls from the . Public Service. They filled,a gap and the splendid service they and their organisers, as well as others, have done was highly praised last night by Mr. G. A. Hay den, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board. Public Servants, he said; in addition to making regular contributions by: voluntary, monthly deductions from .their salaries to the patriotic funds, had also assisted in previous appeals to the public,, and what they had done and were doing was greatly appreciated. Apart from money raised in the street yesterday, several cheques were ' received by the National Patriotic Fund Board direct. One was for £300 from ' 'the Marton Red Cross Sub-centre. This '-'money has not been; credited to the receipts from coupons,'but, at the re- • quest of the sub-centre, to the Marton quota of the all-purposes appeal, in aid of services on behalf of ;the sick and wounded. < CHILDREN HELP. A cheque for £5 from Mrs. J. Seville . was'received at th'? board's office, and twp girls from the Kelburn Normal School brought in £3 13s 6d for comforts for prisoners of war, the money representing the proceeds from a concert held by Form 11. Several times in the past pupils of this school have raised money in aid of the patriotic furids. , ~ The sale of coupons in the city was continued this morning, when a special attraction was the'playing of selections by a visiting Allied Force's Band, at the dug-out in ,Featherston Street. In additiontO the handling of the sale of coupons by the Public Service Association, advice has been received by the honorary organiser of the Wellington Appeal, Mr. J. Anriand-Smith, that the Rotary Club and the Returned Services Association, will each do their share in' the campaign. The R.S.A. will start its efljort with a street day in Wellington and' the Hutt Valley on Friday next. All women's organisations who are ready to assist this campaign are asked to get into touch with the secretary of the R.S.A., Mr. Woolley. Twenty dental clinic nurses sold comforts coupons for the fighting forces in Wellington this morning. Receipts amounted to £169 6s 5d and early this afternoon it was announced that the total amount realised in the city this week from the sale of coupons was £2704. Among the larger contributions acknowledged today were the following:—Amos Softgoods Ltd.. £10 10s; Gertrude E. Mirams and Frank J. White, £10 each; Ivor E. Phillipps, £5; H.-M. Blakeley, £5 ss; and A. Robertson, £5. . ' In connection with tonight's radiotelephone appeal, it was announced today that besides cash contributions; gifts of books and art treasures will be accepted for the Churchill auctions in aid of the patriotic funds.
