GIRL DELINQUENTS
Need for the establishment of a separate centre for girl delinquents, especially those suffering from venereal disease, was of compelling urgency in Auckland at present, stated Mr. J- H. Luxford, S.M., at a sitting of the Children's Court there. A problem had arisen in the administration of the Child Welfare Act in consequence of the present wave of juvenile prostitution. The receiving homes were quite unsuitable for this class of juvenile. Their presence in the homes was dangerous, both on medical and moral grounds. The others, in the homes were not necessarily delinquents—some were being cared for by the State because they had no parents, or, if they had, the parents were neglecting their responsibilities, The organisation and. training of the staffs of these homes h?'d not been-directed, towards keeping in control and looking after the other type of inmate. He. hoped the Minisr ter of Health and the Minister of Education would have the matter inquired into without delay.
