ACTION MAY LAST FOR SOME TIME

While no details are available of the renewed German offensive on the Kharkov front, a Moscow message makes it clear that fighting: is fierce and heavy and that both sides arc prepared for action on a major scale to last for some time. The fighting at Sebastopol is growing in intensity, as the Germans arc continually throwing in new reserves. On the Bryansk front the enemy attempted to capture a village dominating a vital highway, but was repulsed after a Russian counter-attack, the enemy losing over 500 killed. In another sector of this front, a settlement and two heights were captured by the Russians who killed 750 Hungarians. THREE-DAY BATTLE. On the north-west front, two German regiments, supported by tanks and aircraft, stormed a Soviet position but were hurled back after a three days' battle with the loss of 500 men killed. In another sector of the same front, the Russians stormed a height dominating a vital sector. On the Kalinin front, the Russians captured two settlements. On the other sector of this front a German attack was repulsed with loss of 400 killed. On yet another sector of this front, fighting is raging for a settlement which has already changed hands four times.
During the past 24 hours Russian guerrillas in Orel Province have killed nearly 1000 Germans and destroyed. 50 tanks and lorries. —8.0. W.
