WOMEN AND CIVIL DEFENCE
(To the Editor.), Sir,—lf this is an "all-in war" I would like to suggest that the women of New Zealand should now be doing their share. We are told fire watching is necessary; we have been shown that school girls can deal successfully with incendiary bombs. Why not conscript all women between the ages of twenty and forty-five (without children) and have a complete squad of fire-watchers at all times on duty? There are not nearly enough men to do this, and a handful of patriotic women have volunteered but not nearly sufficient. In any case why should the selfish ones (I do not think they are really unpatriotic and care nought for their country) shelter behind a few willing workers?—l am, etc., ALL-IN EFFORT. [It should be pointed out that the registration of women has begun with two age classes, and that, while the enrolment of women for civil defence is not compulsory, many thousands are voluntarily serving in various branches of the Emergency Reserve Corps.]
