NEW NAVAL CHIEF

COMMODORE LAKE

FOUGHT AT JUTLAND

Commodore Sir Atwell H. Lake, Bt., 0.8. E., who recently arrived in New Zealand, will succeed Commodore W. E. Parry, C.8., as Chief of the Naval Staff and first member of the Naval Board. This was announced today by the Minister of Defence (Mi*. Jones). The period of Commodore Parry's loan to New Zealand from the Royal Navy has expired and, until his actual departure, he will act in an advisory capacity. Sir Atwell Lake left England on February 19 and travelled, via Washington to meet Admiral King, other U.S.A. naval authorities, and the New Zealand Minister to Washington (Mr. Nash). He then proceeded to Australia, where he met Admiral Leary and the members of the Australian Commonwealth Naval Board, and travelled from Sydney to Auckland by air.

During the last war he served under Admiral, Beatty in H.M.S. Lion, and took part in the Battle of Jutland. Prior to coming to this country he was Chief of Staff to Admiral Sir William James,' X.C.8., " Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth.
