DOUBLE TRAGEDY
Mother and Son Electrocuted
(P.AO DUNEDIN, This Day. A double tragedy occurred near Owaka yesterday when Mrs. Alexander Sinclair and her son, aged 16," were electrocuted. It appears that a fault developed in a wireless set, and by some means the outside aerial became alive. The son went outside to look at the aerial, and when he came in contact with it received a shock. His mother ran to his assistance and was also electrocuted. Some time elapsed before their plight was discovered. Resuscitation efforts proved fruitless.
should receive the 3s (or Is 6d) a shift, even though shifts were not rotated.
After that case, the Minister, in February; 1941, made an amending order which said that night workers should receive 3s (or Is 6d) a shift, but as ordinarily there were much fewer night workers than day workers in woollen mills, it was provided that day workers should divide . among themselves a pool equal to the shift pay received by night workers in any one week.
The case now before the Court of Appeal raises questions as to the validity of the Minister's order. -- Mr. Spratt, who opened his case first, invited the Court to find that the Minister, in respect of providing for payment to day workers of shift pay, was not satisfied when he made the order that that provision was necessary. » Argument is proceeding.
