THE REAL ENEMY

NAZISM RATHER THAN GERMAN PEOPLE

RUGBY, March 5. The British attitude' towards the German State and its people was restated in the House of Commons by the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, in reply to Commander Stephen King-Hall, who asked whether an order of the day issued by M. Stalin emphasising the necessity for making a distinction between the Hitlerite regime and the German people also represented the policy of the British Government. - "The attitude. of the British Government on • this' matter," said Mr. Eden, "has been repeatedly stated both on their own behalf and 'jointly with other Governments. It is not inconsistent with M. Stalin's recent pronouncement." Mr. Eden reminded the House of the statement he made on August 30 last defining the attitude of the British Government to Germany. He had said at that time that the British policy towards Germany after the war. might have a ltw6-fold purpose. On the one hand, Germany must be placed in a condition in which it would be impossible for her again to re-arm and resume the struggle for domination over peace-loving" nations. They had had enough of that from Germany. On the other hand, it was equally important that Germany should not become a source of embarrassment to (her neighbours and the world by suffering economic collapse. It was clear that neither of these purposes was attainable as long as the present regime in Germany continued.—B.O.W.
