FOR SCRAP METAL

EARL BALDWIN'S GATES

(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, March 4. All of Earl Baldwin's iron railings and gates have been taken for scrap metal, except a pair of gates at 'the entrance to the drive which were presented to him on his retirement, said Mr. G. Hicks, Parliamentary Secretary of Works and Buildings, replying to a question, in the House of Commons. Captain A. C. Graham: Are you aware that it is most necessary to leave Earl Baldwin these gates in order to protect him from the just indignation of the mob? Mr. Hicks did not reply.

Scrap-metal inspectors, after examining the iron gates of Earl Baldwin's Worcestershire home, scheduled them for munition-making, but Earl Baldwin, wishing to retain the gates because of their artistic merit, appealed to the district panel committee.
