ANDAMAN ISLANDS

LONG PLIGHT MADE

LONDON, February 27,

The latest development in the Pacific war is that Japanese bombers have flown far over the Bay of Bengal and bombed Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands, about 400 miles south-west of Rangoon.

This news comes in a message from New Delhi, which says that Port Blair was raided by three Japanese planes on Tuesday and again yesterday.

In the first attack the enemy planes bombed the aerodrome and machinegunned the ground staff. There were no military casualties but two civilians were killed and five wounded

Yesterday's raid was more extensive and lasted for nearly an hour. Japanese planes bombed and machine-gunned various places, including the aerodrome. There were no casualties.

This is the first report of a Japanese attack on the territory of British India

The Andaman Islands have been used by the Government of India for more than 80 years as a penal settlement, but the islands include a number of harbours and several anchorages, one of which is Port Blair.
