DISCUSSION BY METHODISTS
The annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand yesterday afternoon turned down a motion, brought forward by North Canterbury, that the Minister of Broadcasting be approached asking that strict supervision be applied to both the National and Commercial broadcasts, in the direction of eliminating features which arc offensive to good taste and injurious to the public mind*, and that special attention be given to Sunday broadcasts. lt passed, how-; ever, a Taranaki-Wanganui motion that ■ appreciation be recorded of thby j facilities afforded for the devotiona J services conducted on weekdays b; f the National stations. The Rev. W. T. Blight said that ot ie or two instances had been given of t/he broadcasting of what had been c^p.sidered objectionable features. The Rev. P. Paris said that it r.ras no use passing such a resolution i. unless they could point out the date :«aid time of certain objectionable feati/iras. Otherwise, they would be thrown ag, a reflection on" everything, including [ the church broadcasts. . "Some of the commercial broadcasts, especially, contain many s' tories which are calculated to do injury to the minds of children," said the - ; Rev. Mr. Blight. "One might also m ejition the objectionable crooning 'tha I goes on. They move straight awaj,' from Sunday services to a very much, lower level indeed." The Rev. B. M. Chrysfal] sa/ id that there was provision in each district for protests to be made agai nst any particular broadcasts. To mak t a general resolution was not quite. playing the game. It was far better to leave the question to the distrif :ts concerned. The motion was defeated b j',a large majority. .
