HEAVY PLANE LOSSES

JAPANESE OVER JAVA

LONDON, February 20

Yesterday's Japanese air attack on the naval base at. Surabaya was intercepted by defending fighters. Five Japanese bombers and five fighters were shot down. Japanese attacks on two aerodromes in western Java resulted in only unimportant damage arid at least 15 Japanese planes were shot down over Java. Altogether four of our fighters were lost but threes of the pilots are safe.

An observer in Java said that the raid on one of the aerodromes reminded him of the dogfights over Britain in 1940. The enemy bombers were attacked by fighters—Dutch, British, and American —which went out to meet the raiders and quickly broke up enemy formations.
