GERMAN VESSEL
VICTIM OF U-BOAT
UNSUCCESSFUL RUSE
LONDON, February 17
A German ship of 5000 tons has been torpedoed and sunk by an Axis submarine. It is not known whether the submarine was German or Italian.
The sinking was disclosed this evening by the Admiralty, which stated that on the evening of January 31 an SOS %vas received saying that a ship, purporting to be the British liner Brittany, had been torpedoed 450 miles north of the Azores.
The Brittany was in other waters, and it was clear that the sinking ship was an enemy vessel.
The message was repeated in German and English, the position and the ship's name being given.
A search of the area was ordered and a patch of oil three miles wide was found.
