FOUL BLOW
An American garbage boat, Tahoe, rammed and probably sank a Japanese submarine off the U.S. coast near San Francisco on December 20, states a New York report dated January 27. The master of the Tahoe, a wooden boat with a crew of 12, reports that after dumping refuse in the sea he sighted a periscope and part of a submarine's superstructure a few yards ahead. Resolutely he steered the garbage boat against the enemy. It knocked off the periscope and rammed the hull with a terrific jolt. The submarine submerged and, did not come up again. This odd engagement has not been reported before because of military reasons.
tion of the strike and lock-out regulations. All pleaded guilty.
Defending counsel, Mr. W. R. Tuck, said it was a great pity they took action, though they had a real grievance concerning transport facilities.
"One of the most significant factors in the industrial world today is that little notice is taken of grievances until the men take violent or extreme action," said Mr. Tuck.
"All of which goes to show. that there must be a changed outlook on both sides," said the Magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford.
The defendants were ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. Mr. Luxford said they would not be" called if they complied with the award. "It should be known, however," the Magistrate added, "that on proof of breach of the conditions the defendants will be liable to arrest, and the Court will deal in no uncertain manner if the conditions of the suspension are broken."
