LT.-COL. W. N. PHARAZYN

. The appointment of Major W. N. Pharazyn as military attache on Mr. Nash's staff at Washington and his promotion to the rank of LieutenantColonel (temporary) are notified in a Gazette issued last night. Colonel Pharazyn relinquishes his appointment on the New Zealand Temporary Staff and is reposted to the New Zealand Artillery and seconded for duty with the New Zealand Minister in Washington.

Colonel Pharazyn is a native of Wellington and was educated at Nelson College, Dulwich College, and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He joined the Royal Field Artillery as a second lieutenant in 1914. He rose to the rank of acting-major in command of his battery during the war and was wounded in the Battle of the Somme. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1918 and served through the last year of the war on the Italian front. He then spent three years with the army of occupation at Constantinople before retiring from the army. He visited Europe and Russia in 1931 and lectured on Russia on his return to New Zealand. Before the outbreak of the present war he was secretary of the Clerical Workers' Union, the Wellington Journalists' Union, and the New Zealand Journalists' Union.
