CABINET CHANGES

MR. ERASER TO CONTROL FINANCE

New Zealand's Minister to Washington (Mr. Nash), accompanied by Mrs. Nash, Mr. T. R. Aickin (chief private secretary), Lieut.Colonel W.N. Pharazyn (military s attache), and Mr. 1 Bruce Turner (assistant secretary), have arrived at San Francisco, the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) announced today. Mr. Fraser said that Mr. Nash and his party had proceeded to the United States by air, spending some days en route at Honolulu, where Mr. Nash had consulted with the American authorities regarding Pacific defence.

It is- understood that Mr. Nash will retain his portfolios during his absence and consequently they will be administered here by Ministers in an acting capacity. The Prime Minister will take the most important,, that of Finance, which is now mainly a matter of war finance, the Minister of Health (Mr. Nordmeyer) will take Customs and Land and Income Tax, the Attorney-General (Mr. Mason) will take Stamp Duties, and the Minister of Public Works (Mr. Armstrong) will take charge of Soldiers' Financial Assistance.

It would be necessary to legalise the appointment to representative overseas positions of Ministers and .members of the Legislature, Mr. Fraser said, and consequently the necessary measure would come before Parliament.
