DUTCH EAST- INDIES
AUSTRALIA PLEDGES AID
CANBERRA, January 7. A pledge of the fullest possible aid to the Netherlands East Indies to resist the Japanese push south at a point | determined by the Allied strategy was | given today by the Prime Minister, Mr. |J. Curtin. to Dr. Van Mook, Lieutenant- | Governor-General of the Netherlands East Indies, who conferred with him on the combined Allied command in the Pacific.
Mr. Curtin said that Dr. Van Mook -gave an assurance that the Netherlands East Indies were determined to hold out to the end. Their main need was for armaments, which would be given them to the fullest extent of Australia's capacity.
It is understood that Dr. Van Mook put forward a view which is shared by the Commonwealth that temporary losses of territory are having a bad effect on the native populations, and that it is essential that the Allies should fight desperately to cause maximum enemy casualties.
The Netherlands Government, said Dr. Van Mook in an interview, had been under no illusions concerning the strength of the Japanese and had been preparing a scorched earth policy for more than twelve months.
Dr. Van Mook has left for Melbourne to discuss with technical experts Australia's capacity to help.
