BOTH DECLINE IN BRITAIN

Fewer deaths and fewer births were registered during the first 13 weeks of this year, compared with the corresponding period of 1940, according to the latest quarterly return issued by the. Registrar-General.
The total of 147,020 live births was a decrease of 7325 on the March quarter a year ago, representing a birth-rate of 14.4 per 1000, compared with 15. The average rate for the first quarters of the,five preceding years was 14.8.
The deaths during the quarter fell by 26,336 to 178,647, compared with a year ago. This gave a death-rate of 17.5 per 1000, compared with 19.9, and an. average of 14.6 during the same period in the five preceding years.
Infant mortality was 75 per 1000 live births, and there was a reduction of 28,073 in the number of marriages. —8.0. W.
