CONTROL IN ERITREA

EAST AFRICAN COMMAND

RELIEF FOR AUCHINLECK

LONDON, October 7. The War Secretary, Captain Margesson, told the House of Commons today that the former Italian colony of Eritrea is to be part of the new East ; African Command. The new command had been set up to take a burden of ; military work off Sir Claude Auchin- ' leek, Commander-in-Chief, the Middle East. The transfer will take place by arrangement between the two commands. It will leave Sir Claude -free for operations in more active fields of war. Captain Margesson stated that there was no question of any part of the Italian civil administration retaining power in Eritrea. The British Government has agreed with Haile Selassie's intention to raise and maintain an Ethiopian army under his o\vn command. Britain will send British officers and instructors to help the Emperor to organise and train his forces. ,
