MASTERTON CANDIDATES
(0.C.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. With better going and the flags fairly close to the rails there was much more colour in the track work at Awapuru yesterday morning. There was a cold breeze but otherwise the conditions were favourable. Stairway, Colombo Bay, and Kaalooa galloped six furlongs, and after running the first furlong in 15sec they completed in Imin 22 3-ssec, the last five in Imin 7 3-ssec. It was a useful Opaki trial for Colombo Bay. Miss Leighon had The Buzzer as a partner over a mile. After a slow start they ran the last seven furlongs in Imin 35sec, and the last three in 40sec. The Buzzer was a length to the good. There was little between Drake's Drum and Taane Pango at the end of six furlongs in Imin 22sec. They came home solidly, running the last three in just over 40sec. Henry of Huntingdon and Colac sprinted five furlongs in Imin 9sec, both going well. Cracker jack and Verify, from a barrier start, ran three furlongs along the back stretch in 39 4-ssec. Crackerjack dwelt at the start, but.moved smoothly when he got under way. Samarra, another Longbush candidate at Masterton, was sent away from a barrier start in company with Light Fingers and Harmony's half-sister. Samarra was slow to move, but was on terms at the finish, running the three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. Riding engagements for Masterton have been announced as under:—S. Waddell, Olein, White Rajah, Rink, Corn Prince, The Whipper, Beau Coureur; H. P. Stewart, Colombo Bay, Inform, Damask, Courting; C. A. Bowry, Miss Leighon; P. Brady, Pern.
