BEING CALLED UP
"A YOUNG MAN'S FANCY.
MEN FROM GRADE 111
MILITARY POSTS TO FILL
URGENT NEEDS
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, September 26
Many employers have apparently overlooked the fact that members of their staffs who have been classed by the military authorities as fit for home service only are eligible to be called up at any time for service in the Dominion and for a term extending to the duration of the war. The recent introduction of intensified training in New Zealand, however, is bringing home the eligibility of grade 111 men, who are being called up in large numbers to fill positions and thus "release fit men for complete military training.
A number of posts have been created through the establishment of the new Tank Corps. Many of the positions call for technical qualifications. . and motor drivers, draughtsmen, welders, clerks, typists,, shorthand writers, and batmen are included in the!list of .positions which must be filled with a minimum of delay. Some of the grade 111 men chosen appeared to have lost sight of their military Obligations, and were surprised at receiving call-up notices. A number of employer's have also been surprised at learning of the Army's. need for men they had counted on retaining except in the direst emergency.
The positions being filled are mainly at Waiouru Military Camp, where the Tank Corps is to be trained. It is the intention of the military authorities, however, to make use of grade 111 men whenever possible in future. Positions at present held by fit soldiers right through the service, except in case pf principal administrators, will be handed over to men who, because of some disability, cannot serve overseas.
