WATER-HEATING LOAD

"GRASSHOPPER HOME TO

ROOST"

Deliberately mixing metaphors, Mr. E. Hitchcock (Christchurch) summed up the problem over, electric water heating at the afternoon session of the Power Board and Supply Authorities Conference yesterday.

Ten years ago, said Mr. Hitchcock, a warning had been given by Mr. L. B. Hutton that "the grasshopper would become a burden." Now, said Mr. Hitchcock, the grasshopper had come home to roost. However, power boards had themselves built up the service and had themselves been responsible for the burdensome water-heating load. Now that the faults had become evident and a change was proposed, the transition should be gradual and not devastating. The conference approved the recommendations made by the engineers and secretaries, whose main points were that as soon as possible all power used for water heating should be metered and thermostatically controlled.
