ANIMAL WEEK

APPEAL FOR FUNDS

T*he Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals draws attention to the forthcoming activities of animal week. The funds raised are to be devoted to the. establishment of an animal clinic. The society states: "At any time such a centre is necessary, but doubly so if at some future date, the situation deteriorates. In Eng4 land the already existing and vast organisation for the care of animals has stood them in good stead. Hospitals, ambulances, etc., have worked day and night during blitz periods. Matters might have been serious if no preparations had been made, for thousands of wounded creatures left to die in the streets would have proved a fruitful source Of disease. It is not to the credit of Wellington that the S.P.C.A. is unable to provide for sick and injured animals. Organisations for the protection of animals are worthy of generous support.

"Our various humanitarian organisations are playing a great part, if not the greatest part, in fostering spiritual progress. Our King said recently: 'There is in the heart of practically every man, woman, and. child in our nation today, a real desire to be a friend to animals. Kindly deeds react upon our character and make us better citizens.' What in these troublous times is more important than character and good citizenship?

"At a meeting of the London University's Animal Welfare Society, held during the conference of Educational Associations at the university, speaker after speaker, emphasised the importance of the right training of children in this respect. "It is a question which vitally concerns all women who have the care and upbringing of a family, for insensitiveness lies at the root of so many of the world's ills. We therefore appeal to the public to help in this great work."
