KITCHENER TRUST
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
EXTENSION OF SCOPE
Under the provisions of the Kitchener Memorial Scholarship Trust Bill, introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday and read a first time, the fund is vested in the Public Trustee, and alterations are made in the classes of persons eligible to receive the scholarships. The Attorney-General (Mr. Mason) explained that at the time of the last war Sir Heaton Rhodes donated moneys to constitute a fund to grant scholarships for soldiers and their dependants for their education. It was desired to provide a permanent trustee for the fund, and the Bill provided for the appointment of the Public Trustee to that office. Sir Heaton Rhodes and the Director of Education became advisory trustees. Mr. Mason added that the trust was extended to cover members of the armed forces of the present war and their sons.
The award of scholarships under the Bill, their value, and the terms and conditions of their tenure are to be in the discretion of the advisory trustees. The scholarships are to be held at a college established by or in connection with the University of New Zealand and providing higher education in subjects relating to agriculture. Except in special circumstances, scholarships are to -be awarded alternately for tenure at a college in the South Island and a college in the North Island.
