MINISTER EXPLAINS

MAINLY FOR ARMED FORCES

The recent importation of Australian potatoes was made because of the obvious shortage of local supplies, said the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Barclay) in the House of Representatives /esterday, when replying to ah urgent question from Mr. J. N. Massey 'National, Franklin).

Mr. Barclay said that the shipment was being utilised mainly to supply the requirements 6i the armed forces. He added that the policy of the Government in relation to production of potatoes within the Dominion remained unchanged and at no time would importations be made while local supplies were adequate and available at reasonable prices.
