Where surplus conns are available they may be grown in rows in the vegetable garden for use as cut blooms. They do not require too much sun and are better for some protection from wind, as the tall spikes are liable to damage otherwise,
When grown in beds by themselves the conns should be placed about 9 inches apart, allowing more space if specially fine blooms are wanted. Planted in beds with a carpeting of violas or other dwarf plants, they may be planted more sparingly. If planted in the mix^d border "' is advisable to make fairly bold clumps of one colour, placing them 6 inches apart.
Cover the conns with 4 inches or so of soil, and if the ground is at all heavy surround each conn with coarse sand to ensure good drainage and prevent rotting,
