"DAY OF THE WEEK" BAZAAR
PETONE HELP FOR V.M.C.A
A novel idea, excellently carried out, was the bazaar organised by the Petone Ladies' Auxiliary of the Valley V.M.C.A., and held one day recently. Six months' hard work resulted in particularly well stocked and attractively arranged stalls whose contents were classified to fill the housewife's needs for each day in the week and . labelled accordingly. The stall conveners were Mrs.- J. Wilson. Mrs: A. Miller, Mrs. H. Kersley, Mrs. W. Miller, Mrs. Vere Curtis, Mrs Melrose and Mrs. C. A. Williamson. A kiosk in the centre of the hall provided every variety of sweets, the convener being Mrs. J. D. King. Delicious afternoon tea was also served.
Mr. W. Carey, president of the Hutt Valley V.M.C.A., outlined the object of the bazaar, thanked the auxiliary for its fine work, and introduced the Deputy Mayor of Petone, Mr. A. Macfarlane, who, in opening the function, paid a tribute to the work done by the V.M.C.A. in the physical and mental development of youth with the incidental learning of self-control and of becoming good mixers in social life. Mr. Andrews endorsed these remarks.
Bouquets of flowers were presented to Mrs. F. Greenfield, president of the auxiliary, and to Mrs. Carey, The bazaar was continued in the evening, when games and competitions took place and a short programme was contributed by Mesdames E. Rothwell, Caverhill, and Mr. Palmer (instrumental trios), Judith Watt (exhibition dances), and physical displays by young boy and girl members of the V.M.C.A.
