COAL MINE IDLE
DISPUTE OVER HEATING
(O.C?) GREYMOUTH, September 24. The Wallsend mine was idle today following a dispute over the heating of a working place. The dispute arose yesterday morning when, on the refusal of the manager to make a special payment provided in the award in cases of heating, the pair of miners working in the place and some truckers came out of the mine. The manager refused to make the payment requested, .as he considered that the place was not up to the temperature for which the special payment is allowed.
The rest of the miners continued working yesterday, but this morning the matter came up for discussion at a stop-work meeting at the bath-house. The manager received a deputation from the men and offered to close^he particular working place and refer the question to a disputes committee. The deputation appeared to be satisfied with the suggestion and returned to the meeting, but the men did not go into the mine.
It is understood the miners will work tomorrow.
