NGAURUHOE ACTIVE

COLUMN OF VAPOUR

WHITE CLOUD OVER SUMMIT

(0.C.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Rising several hundred feet above the summit and spreading out into a white cloud, a column of vapour has been issuing from Mount Ngauruhoe since Sunday, according to information received last night from Chateau Tongariro. The activity, which has not taken the shape of a violent eruption, is the first to be reported since last October Capped with snow, the volcano presented an impressive sight on Sunday, when activity was at its height and visibility at its best. From the Waiouru side of the mountain,. the snow appears to be darkened, but no such discoloration is noticeable from the Chateau, where the . column of vapour is visible only after it has reached 300 feet.

Deep snow has prevented an ascent of Mount Ngauruhoe to investigate the activity. ,; Reports that the eruption had caused the lake in the crater on Mount Ruapehu to become crusted with sulphur were not substantiated by the guide at Salt Hut on the mountain.
