MR. POLSON'S CONTENTION
In spite of price control, prices in New Zealand were higher today drider":th'e .Government's -policy than they had been since 1914, declared Mr. W. J. Poison (National, Stratford) tn the House of, Representatives last night. He added that at no time in the history ot New Zealand had prices been so high as at the present time.
A Government voice: Look at the subsidies.
The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr. Sullivan): In what country ha? this not occurred?
Mr. Poison said that prices in Australia were substantially lower than in New Zealand.
Mr. W. M. C. Denham (Government, Invercargill) said that Mr. Poison had misrepresented the position. Two years after the last war the 41b loaf cost Is 2d and butter was 2s 6d per Ib, and petrol, which was sold in fourgallon tins, was 30s a case of two tins. "The hon. gentleman does say things if he can get away with them,1' ■> added.
