VICEREGAL. Government House, Wellington, September 23. This afternoon his Excellency the Governor-General, attended by Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, visited the Salvation Army Men's Industrial Home at Miramar. September 24. His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral presided at a meeting of the Executive Council this morning. Tomorrow their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Newall, attended by Wing Commander H. C. Bevan (Military Secretary) and Captain C J. Holland-Martin, A.D.C., will pay their first official visit to Masterton, returning to Wellington in the evening. Sergeant Pilot A. J. Black, of Christchurch, previously reported missing, is now reported to be a prisoner of war and wounded. Sergeant Black (who enlisted in Christchurch; came down during operations on August 21, when flying a Spitfire fighter. He commenced his training at Taieri and finished at Wigram, leaving for overseas last February. He had been attached to the squadron led by Wing Commander D. R. Bader, the legless flyer, who was brought down in France some time earlier. Dr. G. H. A. Whitta, house surgeon at the Wanganui Hospital, has resigned to take up private practice at Hunterville. Flying Officer, «j. W. Thomson, who has been awarded the distinguished Flying Cross, is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Thomson, of "Corrie," Hakataramea. Educated at the Waitaki Boys' High School, he took up a position at the Magistrate's Court, Hokitika, later going to Blenheim, where he leadned to fly. Flying Officer Thomson went to England as a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force last November. He has made 31 flights over Germany, and has had several hazardous experiences, including flying home with a smashed control board, and a successful contest with five enemy fighters, one ot which he brought do.wn. On another occasion he dropped a stick of bombj which straddled a German warship at Brest. Mr. O. L. Wrigley, who has been prominently connected with cricket and Rugby in .Wellington, is transferring to Westport. In advising the Wellington Rugby Union of his resignation as secretary of the Seatoun and Rongotai College Old Boys' Club, he expressed his club's and his own appreciation of the union's courtesy and attention. Constables J. Moore and S. C. Higgins, who are being transferred from Petone to Waitara and Upper Hutt respectively, were entertained yesterday afternoon by members of the Hutt Valley and Bays police and court staffs. Constable J. Moore was presented with an electric jug, toaster, and pipe, and Constable Higgins with a bronze firescreen and set of fire irons. Mrs. Higgins also received a presentation. The presentations were made by Senior Sergeant H. C. D. Wade, and speeches were made by Sergeant J. W. McHolm and other members of the two staffs. Mr. W. Appleton was re-elected chairman of the Wellington Technical College Board of Governors on Monday evening, . „ I Mr. Ronald Syme, formerly of Auckland University College, who escaped from the Belgrade Legation to Cairo, has been appointed to a post with the British Embassy at Ankara. Brigadier P. H. Bell, D.5.0., officer commanding the Northern Military District, is visiting Wellington.
