RUGBY LEAGUE

MIRAMAR'S FEAT

AUCKLAND SIDE BEATEN

Though conditions were all against fast, open football, the Rugby League match between Richmond Rovers (Auckland) and Miramar at the Basin Reserve on Saturday provided plenty of bright and entertaining incident. Victory went to Miramar by 12 points to 8, and there is no doubt on the day they fully deserved their success. They adopted tactics suitable to the conditions, whereas Richmond tried to open up the game at every opportunity, but, as only to be expected, the greasy ball proved too elusive to handle with any degree of accuracy. Richmond made a supreme effort to turn defeat into victory In the final stages, and only extremely bad luck kept them out on at least two occasions. Much of the credit for the winners' success was due to the full-back, McLachlan, who gave an outstanding exhibition. His tackling was deadly, and he never made a mistake, either on defence or attack: Fitzgerald, Bouzard, and Winiata figured prominently in several entertaining movements, while the best of the forwards were Cleland and Woods. ' The Richmond backs were inclined to be caught flat-footed, an offender in this respect being Solomon, who was quite often caught in possession when he could have sent his supports away. Welsb, Jack, and Tittleton combined to advantage, and among the forwards Mackintosh, Mitchell, and Potter were always prominent. Foi Miramar, Woods and Cleland scored tries, Fitzgerald converting one and kicking a penalty an<! a field goal. For Richmond Rovers, Potter and Broadhead scored tries, Webb converting one. Mr. W. Simpson refereed.

Auckland.—North Shore 19, Newton 9; Ponsonby 12, Papakura 9; Manukau 33, Mount Albert 18; Marist 8, City 5. North Shore won the championship. ,
