Because of the war and the necessity of making as much steel as, possible available for war purposes' the recommendation had been made by the committee dealing with the matter not to proceed with the construction of the new building for the Printing and Stationery Department in Wellington, stated the Minister in Charge of the Department (Mr. Webb) during consideration of the Estimates in the House of Kepresentatives today.
The Printing Office, said the Minister, was over-crowded and was unsuitable for the work it was called upon to do. Although tenders had been called for the construction of a new building, owing to the war it had been decided not to go ahead with the work during the war. The Minister added that he was uneasy about the conditions under which the staff worked. The sooner it was reasonably possible to proceed with the new building the better it would, be.
