THRILLING BOXING

WIN FOR HANSON

SURPRISE AT TOWN HALL

The most rousing fistic battle seen in the Wellington ring for a long time was staged at the Town Hall last night when Tommy Hanson (Wellington), 9st 121b, beat Clarrie Rayner (Blenheim). 9st 7slb, on points over twelve threeminute rounds. Hanson, whose chances against the seasoned visitor haH not been greatly favoured, fought in winning vein the whole way and his success was exceedingly popular with the large crowd.

There have been more scientific displays in the past, but it is hard to recall one in which there was more honest-to-goodness fighting or heavier punching. The pace was so hot right from the start that it did not seem possible for the boxers to stay the distance, but the milling was just as vigorous in the last round as in- the first.

Hanson's solid frame proved to be tough enough to absorb all the punches Rayner could hand out, and he inflicted considerable punishment on the latter with a "one-two" left and a smashing right swing. Rayner gave one of his best performances, but could do nothing to check the onslaught.

> Mr. Dick Meale (formerly of Auckland) was the referee in the main bout and Captain C. Mullany for the amateurs. The judges were Messrs. P. W. Woods and W. P. Sommerville.
