AMERICAN DEFENCES
APPEAL BY LA GUARDIA
NEW YORK, May 29
The Mayor of New York, Mr. F. La Guardia, in his first speech as Director of Civilian Defences, appealed to those disagreeing with President Roosevelt's policy to do and say nothing which would give comfort to the potential enemy, as everything Americans ' said was immediately cabled to Germany.
The Under-Secretary of War, Mr. R. P. Patterson, said at an underwriters' dinner: "The war is spreading and is ready to leap the ocean, and engulf America. We cannot permit the defence preparations to be hindered by anyone."—U.P.A.
