RACING AT AWAPUNI

WANGANUI MEETING

CLARION CALL'S RECORD

(By "Binocular.")

There will be racing at Awapuni, Napier Park, and Wingatui tomorrow, with the Auckland Racing Club ushering in the Great Northerns on Monday, but at this end of the North Island principal interest will be centred in the Wanganui ixture which, owing to the club's own course being occupied by the military, will be staged at Awapuni.

To the Wanganui Club falls the honour of staging *he first steeplechase contest to be presented on the new track at Awapuni, and the formidable nature of at least some of the obstacles will make the race a very fitting test. Topweight in the steeplechase is Clarion Call, winner of the event in 1937, 1938, and 1940 (he was missing in 1939), and on this occasion he will be vrequired to carry the steadier of 13.2. This grand performer has been rather under a cloud of late, otherwise he would no doubt have been at Ellerslie. and his owner has wisely decided not to ask too much of him meantime. Also included in the field is another triple winner, the veteran Riotous, who registered his first win in the Wanganui Steeples as long ago as 1934. He returned to the River City course twelve months later to again prevail, and his third win came two years ago. Figuring in the Century Hurdles is this year's winner of the Grand National Hurdles, Limbohm, who is spoken of as likely to go north for the Great Northern Meeting after fulfilling his engagement at Awapuni. Consequently, his display will be watched very critically, more particularly as he has not raced since he failed at Trentham last October. The Connolly Handicap, the big flat event, has attracted a strong field of good-class performers, and the indications are that highly interesting racing, will be the order of the day. The totalisator will be operated on the 75-25 basis of

betting. HORSES IN FORM. Form horses who promise to be well supported are:— Purua Hurdles.—Foxiana (if started), Manteau or Regicide. Maiden Race.—La Rosita, Ringless or Sandy Bay.
