NEW MELLING BRIDGE

ALTERATION OF CHANNEL

The question of a new bridge over the Hutt River at Melling was briefly discussed by the Hutt River Board yesterday. Mr. J. W. Andrews, a member of the board, said he was concerned at the removal of shingle from the bed of the river, knowing that when the cut was made all that was now being taken out would have to be replaced when the rivev took its new course. He suggested that the Lower Hutt City Council and the board might consider the matter at an early date. It,was pointed out that the new bridge might need a ramped road from the Western Hutt Road entrance and that until the Railway Department decided its future policy in regard to the railway no finality could be reached. It was decided to ask the Department whether a defined policy had been reached. Contingent upon the same question was the replacement of a railway siding further south, which was damaged by the last heavy floods, and which the board was anxious to have replaced.

The secretary of the-board. Mr. A. J. Gearing, reported that the groynes, piles, and rails had been completed at the site of the recent erosion at Belmont, and that, the cost was £949.
