VERDICT FOR DEFENDANT

A verdict in favour of the Union | Steam Ship Company was returned iby a jury of four in the.Supreme Court today in a case in which Bertram Stanford, a waterside worker, claimed damages from the company as a' result of having his right forefinger broken when he was working for the company on the Kairanga at Miramar Wharf on November 21, 1940. He alleged negligence against the company, which denied it. He claimed £300 general damages and £73 6s special damages, less £150 16s 8d already paid to him by the company under the Workers' Compensation Act. Judgment was entered for the company, which did not apply for costs.

Mr. Justice Ostler presided. Mr. F.~ W. Ongley appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. G. G, G, Watson for the defendant
