AIR MISHAP

COLLISION OVER SEA

ONE PILOT MISSING

THE OTHER INJURED

Two aircraft of the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Blenheim collided in the air when practising formation flying about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. One machine, piloted by Leading: Aircraftman Alec Haigh, fell into the sea and no trace was found of the pilot, who is presumed to be dead. Leading Aircraftman John Joseph Fox was the pilot of the other machine, which made a forced landing on the beach. Fox was admitted to the Wairau Hospital suffering from slight wounds and abrasions. His condition is not serious.

The accident happened a short distance out to sea, between White Blufl: and the Awatere River mouth, northwest of Cape Campbell. Wreckage from the plane which fell into the sea was located shortly afterwards by a R.N.Z.A.F. launch which happened to be proceeding through Cook Strait.

No details are yet available, but it appears that there were three planes flying in formation and that two collided, the aircraft piloted by Leading Aircraftman Haigh being cut practically in half.

Leading Aircraftman Haigh\ father is Mr. Arthur Haigh. Humphries Street, Greytown. Mrs. Mary Patricia Fox, 19 Hankey Street, Wellington, is the wife of Leading Aircraftman Fox.

A court of inquiry will be held
