GENERAL RESERVE

ENROLMENT ONUS

ON THE INDIVIDUALS

The Minister of National Service (Mr.. Semple) said today that many men were still under the impression that, provided they had registered for social security purposes and were in possession of H, levy book, they were automatically'registered under the National Service Emergency Regulations.

"Although the position has been explained many times," said Mr. Semple, "it will bear repetition, especially in view of the fact that married men will shortly be called upon to enrol and may be under the same misapprehension. Registration for social security purposes has no relation to a man's obligation to enrol under the National Service Emergency Regulations. Some confusion has probably been caused because whe;u the regulations were first brought into operation last June, the social security registration forms were used as the basis for compiling the initial ballot register, which consisted of men of the First Division only.

"This course was adopted only as a matter of expediency, and as soon as the work of compiling the register was completed the social security form was withdrawn from use and all subsequent enrolments were required to be made on form (N.S.I), which is, and has been for some months past, available at all post offices throughout the country. At present, the First Division only is enrolled and if a member of that division is not in possession of a certificate of enrolment, the onus is on him to take steps to ascertain that he is in fact enrolled.

"The easiest method of doing this is to fill in an enrolment form and send it to the Director of National Service."
