PRESIDENT'S WIN
THE COAL DISPUTE
CATASTROPHE AVERTED
IMMENSE INFLUENCED
(Rec. 10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Ap. 29.| Immediate resumption of coal pro* duction will follow President Roosevelt's successful intervention in the dispute which baffled the Defence Mediation Board and all other attempts at settlement. President Roosevelt's immense influence, it is admitted on all sides, has averted a very grave industrial catastrophe.
The coal stoppage began on March 31 and affected 400,000 miners. The steel, transportation, and other defence industries which had begun to feel the pinch of the coal shortage will now receive coal within a few days.
The southern soft coal operators agreed to increase wages by a dollar^ a day in accordance with President, Roosevelt's suggestion. The remaining differences will be negotiated while production proceeds.—U.P.A.
