HIGH PRAISE

N.Z. SIGNALLERS

COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

(From the Official War Correspondent of the N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East. I

CAIRO, February 16

One of the most treasured mementoes which a detachment of the New Zealand Divisional Signals retains of eight months' continuous service in the Western Desert and Libya is a message of appreciation issued by General O'Connor, commanding the 13th Corps of the Army of the Nile, as- a special order of • the day on the eve of its return to the New Zealand Division.

After describing the detachment as one of the original and most trusted components of the Western Desert force, the message added: "It is with the greatest regret that I bid them farewell and I know the loss will be keenly felt by the many friends they have made. • Their work has been outstanding throughout, and I know the force could not have carried out its task without their help."

The commanding officer replied that the association of the detachment with the force from the outbreak of hostilities against Italy until the successful advance to Derna would be a page in the history of New Zealand Divisional Sienals which would always be recalled with pride and nleasure.

After returning to Libya" the detachment enioyed its Christmas dinner in a city restaurant, six weeks after Christmas Day.
